Nearly 50 years ago, thousands assembled in Houston, Texas for the 1977 National Women’s Conference:
the first and only federally-funded gathering of its kind
in U.S. history. Together, they adopted a National Plan of Action to improve the lives of women across the country and set forth a vision to achieve gender equality in America.

Today, their work remains unfinished. We are losing decades of hard-won progress and moving backward in this fight.

Moving History Forward reimagines the goals of the 1977 National Women’s Conference for a new era, striving to fulfill its promise of gender equality for all. Together, we’ll build on the legacy of those who came before us to shape a collective vision for what comes next.
